Valiente Peak Ranch is a working cattle ranch located southwest of Deming. It is tucked away within the scenic Cedar Mountain Range rising above the Chihuahua desert of southwestern New Mexico. The notable area landmark, and ranch namesake, is the 5,763 foot Valiente Peak.
Access to the ranch from Deming is via the Hermanas Road to Luna County Road 02, which accesses the headquarters. This road junction accessing the ranch is north of the Highway 9 and Hermanas Road intersection, which is easily identified by the Hermanas roadside shipping pens. Deming, population 15,000, is the Luna County seat and is within thirty miles of the ranch.
Valiente Peak Ranch is a large expanse of mountainous high desert rangeland comprised of over 16,500 acres. This is a federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) cattle grazing allotment. The allotment is identified as the Valiente Peak Allotment No. 02046. The permitted yearlong grazing allotment is 237 head of cattle and three horses. Land tenure of the Valiente Peak Ranch is comprised of approximately 280 deeded acres, 2,719.15 New Mexico state lease acres and 13,511 federal BLM acres. The New Mexico state grazing lease is identified as lease #GR 0662.
Range improvements include three large pastures and two traps. Livestock water is supplied from six wells, one of which is a partnership well and a off site partnership spring and water system. Permanent water is distributed to all pastures and traps permitting efficient utilization of the entire range site.
Valiente Peak Ranch is an improved working cattle ranch designed and developed for yearlong operation. The headquarters is located on deeded land adjacent to the Hermanas Draw. The location is private, secluded and scenic. Improvements include a residence,bunkhouse, several outbuildings, sheds, livestock loafing sheds and shipping pens. This is a tidy station with many mature trees, rock fences and water features. Headquarters has an abundance of shallow ground water, as evidenced by the large fishpond cloaked with evergreens and cottonwoods.
Ranges sites are diversified consisting of open draws blending to shallow slopes in the eastern region balanced with the rugged rocky Cedar Mountain Range along the western quadrant of the ranch. Vegetation includes many palatable grasses, weeds, woody plants, cactus and occasional cedars. Elevations range from 4,500 feet along the eastern border to the 6,215 foot Flying W Mountain along the northwest border. Valiente Peak, 5,765 feet, and the Cedar Mountain Range are the dominate geographic features. These pristine scenic desert mountains provide wildlife habitat for mule deer, coyotes, javalinas, and quail, many raptors and fur-bearers. Notable of this mountain feature is the Cedar Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA) that takes in a little over one section of federal BLM rangeland along the northwest border. No vehicle access is permitted in the WSA. Traversing the ranch draining west to east are several significant canyons and draws. Sacaton Draw and Hermanas Draw are the dominate drainages. These drainages benefit the range sites with rainwater runoff, and diverse vegetation, habitat for livestock and wildlife.
